FAQ sales

Can I customise the dimensions of a bending machine?

Jorns bending machines are available in standard lengths of 3.2, 4, 5.2, 6.4, 8, 10 and 12.2 metres. Thanks to the modular machine design and high level of in-house manufacturing, it is also possible for us to construct bending machines of customised lengths. We can thus offer customers exactly what they require, such as machines tailored perfectly to the available space at their facilities.

Can I purchase a new bending machine from Jorns directly?

Since 1973, Jorns AG has successfully developed an agency model in order to offer the best solutions for our customers on site throughout the entire service life of the machine. Services carried out by our sales and service agencies are extensive and include clarifications with our company as manufacturer, feasibility checks, organisation of transport, import of the machine, organisation of machine unloading and on-site instruction. Your agency is also on hand to answer any questions or resolve any malfunctions during the entire service life of your machine. There is nothing to prevent you from purchasing a new bending machine directly from Jorns, but in this case you will not be able to take advantage of the services offered by the sales and service agencies in your country.

Who can help me in configuring my new Jorns bending machine?

You should discuss your current and future expectations when using a new Jorns bending machine with one of the staff from our sales and service agencies, or one of the sales staff at Jorns. You then have a wide range of possible fitting options to choose from. Depending on your requirements, these must either already be taken into account during machine construction or can be prepared for subsequent retrofitting at a later date. We would be happy to advise you further.

How can I configure the machine capacity on my new Jorns bending machine?

Your needs in terms of machine capacity should be clarified on consultation:

  • Bending capacity in steel, aluminium, stainless steel
  • Closing performance for closed folds/hems
  • Maximum/minimum back stop dimension
  • Feasibility of the bending profiles: parallel, tapered, overlapped or tapered-overlapped profiles
  • Safety equipment options
  • Required angular accuracy when bending across the full length or for shorter bending profiles

Find out more about our configurator for your machine capacity. We would be happy to advise you further.

Why does Jorns work with independent sales and service agencies?

All Jorns bending machines are available internationally. Our independent sales and service agencies sell, install and service machines in their respective countries and are our strong partner of choice for our customers in their area. The reasons behind this are simple. Jorns AG develops and manufactures innovative bending and double bending machines in Switzerland. The fact that we sell, install and service them internationally is down to our partners – over 30 independent sales and service agencies who offer a reliable and professional service. The specialists at the Jorns sales and service agencies know our product range like the back of their hand and deal with everything, from consultation, sales, installation and commissioning all the way through to training and maintenance. If you are interested in a Jorns bending machine or are in need of assistance, you can find one of our agencies nearby. Fast, problem-free workflows – from us as manufacturer to you as end customer – are then guaranteed. Incidentally: our agencies can also advise you further on complementary goods for your company.

FAQ customer service

What is the bending capacity on my Jorns bending machine?

Please consult the operating instructions provided to see the maximum bending capacity on your Jorns bending machine. The bending capacity is dependent on the tensile strength and the corresponding yield strength of the material to be bent. If the auxiliary bar is not attached to your bending tool, the bending capacity is reduced by 33%. Additionally, the minimum length of the shank must be taken into account as this has an effect on the point load, bending tool and bending linkage. Not adhering to the specifications can lead to mechanical damage on your bending machine. Please contact us if you can no longer find the operating instructions.

In exceptional circumstances, can I use my Jorns bending machine to bend a short bending profile that is above the maximum bending capacity?

No. Exceptions are not possible as this will lead to damage on your bending machine, regardless of whether you bend a short bending profile or use the machine across its full length. In terms of material thickness and material strength, the bending capacity of your Jorns bending machine corresponds to the information contained in the operating instructions and must not be exceeded.

Where can I buy spare parts for my Jorns bending machine?

Our genuine spare parts in Swiss quality allow your Jorns bending machine to keep working to its full potential. Genuine spare parts can be purchased directly from the sales and service agency in your country. The agency will also organise transportation and any customs formalities on your behalf.

Is remote maintenance of my Jorns bending machine possible?

Jorns bending machines with graphics-based CNC machine control dating from 2011 and later come with the TeamViewer remote maintenance software pre-installed. Provided the machine is connected to the Internet via network cable or Wi-Fi, the customer service team at Jorns AG or the service agency can access your machine control system once you have given your express consent. This allows for troubleshooting and, depending on the cause, remote maintenance and rectification of the fault.

What should be taken into account when fastening down or relocating a Jorns bending machine?

If an existing Jorns bending machine is being moved to a new location in your plant or you have purchased a used bending machine, please pay attention to the following points:

  • Consult with Jorns AG or your local Jorns service partner for professional support.
  • When lifting the machine, ensure that the lashing points as shown in the operating instructions are used. We strongly advise against lifting the bending machine using a forklift. All Jorns bending machines are top-heavy and can slide off the forklift, leading to a danger of injury!
  • Ensure that the subsurface has the necessary load-bearing capacity. The machine weight can be found in the respective operating instructions.
  • When installing the bending machine, ensure it is set up by a qualified specialist. If this is not the case, you will not be able to achieve optimal bending results and the machine may be prone to mechanical damages.

Can safety equipment be retrofitted?

The question of when safety equipment has to be retrofitted is an individual one and can only be answered depending on the requirements of your bending machine and legal regulations. In detail, these are as follows:

In advance: older Jorns bending machines do not have to be retrofitted in accordance with the safety standard from 29.12.2009 onwards, provided no significant modifications have been made to the machine.

If significant modifications have been made to the bending machine, retrofitting in accordance with the safety standard from 29.12.2009 onwards is required.

For example:

  • When additionally controlled or driven optional equipment is added
  • When a higher movement speed is reached through revisions on one of the driven axes
  • When performance is increased
  • When the intended use is changed

Subordinate modifications to bending machines: the safety standard on initial commissioning must be met

If the criteria for a significant modification are not met during a revision, the safety standard following the revision must meet at least the applicable standard in place when the machine was initially commissioned. Selected examples:

  • Revision from motorised shears SM1.5 to shears SL1.5
  • Revision from old generation of control system to one of the latest generation. Incidentally: achieving increased productivity through programming does not count as increasing the machine performance.
  • Revision of a standard bending tool into a customer-specific bending tool, for example by changing the tool design

Legal regulation: Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC

The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC must be applied from 29.12.2009 onwards and is applicable for:

  1. New machines
  2. Machines where a significant modification has been made after 29.12.2009

Jorns regulation on significant modifications to bending machines

Modifications and significant changes to the bending machine which may have an effect on occupational safety are only permitted for the owner of a Jorns bending machine following prior consultation and written approval by Jorns AG, regardless of whether this is carried out by the owner themselves or another party.

This also applies to attaching or adding control, supply and transfer systems of/by third-party suppliers. If this regulation is not adhered to, the owner or customer takes on the role of machine manufacturer and is fully liable in the event of occupational accidents.
